R.E.S.P.E.C.T. – A Reblog

Published May 29, 2018 by Nan Mykel

(Almost makes me believe in “possession,” which Webster’s Dictionary describes as “domination by something (as an evil spirit, a passion or an idea)” and “another “a psychological state in which an individual’s normal personality is replaced by another.”) I’m reblogging.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. … remember the song by Aretha Franklin?  Well, guess what folks — it needs to be re-released, for far too many have forgotten the word.  One of Donald Trump’s promises during his never-ending campaign was to ‘get rid of’ political correctness.  Now, as I said at the time, political correctness is nothing more or less than respect for others and their feelings.  Is it sometimes taken to extremes?  Maybe, but I would rather err on the side of kindness than not.  Today, two glaring examples of the ugliness Donald Trump has unleashed in the nation came to my attention, and I would like to share them with you, dear friends, just so you don’t forget what Trump has turned this nation into.

Remember how incensed some people, mostly republicans, were when Colin Kaepernick, on 01 September 2016, kneeled during the playing of the national anthem, rather than stand?  Of…

Flypaper Thoughts – haibun

FLYPAPER THOUGHTS

Today I could talk straight through until I die and not tell you half

my thoughts and history. None great but I was there and lived it all.  So

much, all the time.  Little things, big feelings—I am an Indian mound full

of artifacts, a wrapped present on Christmas morning, full of surprises.

These atypical thoughts will leave me, but here they are for you to see,

caught on my flypaper.

Update on Create Space

Published May 28, 2018 by Nan Mykel

Mick Rooney writes in The Independent Publisher:  ” Amazon’s self-publishing service, CreateSpace, is laying off staff in its editing, marketing and design division in July because the company is getting out of the business of offering full service options to indie authors. The layoffs will mostly affect customer service positions. Amazon’s long-term plan looks to be to roll the operations of CreateSpace into Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), a DIY platform for self-publishing writers.”

I had a good experience with Create Space in 2014 and 2015 with my two books, but there have been recent complaints about quality, customer service, etc.  Significant staff layoffs while other Amazon endeavors expand must be demoralizing.

It Happened Again, Folks …School shooting

It wasn’t as widely reported as Parkland or Santa Fe, but there was another school shooting last week, this one in Noblesville, Indiana on Friday.  The shooter was a student who asked for permission to leave the classroom and returned armed with two handguns. This time, nobody died.  Care to know why?  Because the shooter was stopped by the unarmed teacher.  A good guy without a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun.  And that, my friends, explains why you may not have heard about this school shooting – it wasn’t sensationalist enough for the media, since nobody died, and it wasn’t in keeping with the NRA’s motto.jason_seamanThe teacher was 29-year-old Jason Seaman, who is being hailed as a hero.  The shooter entered the classroom and immediately began firing, hitting one female student.  Mr. Seaman sprang into action, charging the shooter and knocking him to the ground.  He…

What If My Shadow Speaks the Truth?

Published May 27, 2018 by Nan Mykel

It’s perhaps my naive opinion that Trump’s role in The Apprentice’s “You’re Fired”  series contributed to his narcissistic disregard for others’ welfare.  Did I see the other day that he appeared in the tv series for 14 seasons?  Seems like repeating over and over “you’re fired” could get to be habit-forming.

Trump has appeared to have uncovered organized Christian leaders’ preference for following the money instead of Christ.

Efforts to “drain the swamp” of Washington D.C. seems to have backfired, issuing in 44 individuals with ties to Trump or Pence who have acted as registered lobbyists in 2017, according to a Public Citizen analysis.

How can anyone justify the wealthiest convicts serving their sentences in country club settings while conditions for the poor in most for-profit prisons suffer?  I’d prefer all to serve equally. How can that be justified?  I don’t think Trump would have commandeered  more money for-profit prisons if he thought he would have to serve his sentence there.

Decreasing funds for public education appears to be a step in dumbing down the poor  so they won’t know any better than to vote for Trump again.

The elite NRA has the good old country boys under its spell, illustrating how an overlord can pepper the trail all the way to the witches’ house, where the owner can devour and regurgitate them.

To live content with small means,

to seek elegance rather than luxury,

and refinement rather than fashion,

to be worthy, not respectable,

and wealthy. not rich.

To study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly,

to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart,

to hear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never.

In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious,

grow up through the common.

This is to be my symphony.

Create Space?

Published May 21, 2018 by Nan Mykel

Recently I recommended the Create Space outfit which is an on-demand publishing unit  connected with Amazon.  I published a book through them in 2014 and one in 2015.  I may regret recommending them, I don’t know.  But for now just hold up and let me do a little exploring.

Excerpt on Hearing Voices

Published May 20, 2018 by Nan Mykel

From June 2018 Harpers by  T.M. Luhrmann, via 3 Quarks  Daily

In 1973, David Rosenhan, a professor of psychology at Stanford,….persuaded seven friends to join him in an experiment. He asked them to make appointments at multiple psychiatric hospitals across the country and explain to the doctors that they had heard voices that said things like “empty,” “hollow,” and “thud.” Apart from their names and professions, they were to change no details about their lives. Each participant was admitted as an inpatient to a psychiatric ward, and in every case but one they were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Doctors released them after, on average, nineteen days, but one was held for nearly two months. “It is clear,” Rosenhan wrote, “that we cannot distinguish the sane from the insane in psychiatric hospitals.”….

….Self-report measures find that they work. That is, the methods make hearing voices less aggravating for most people, and some find that their voices become kinder, softer, or even go away. In the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, Hearing Voices groups have become almost mainstream, and many European clinicians have abandoned the oversimplified biomedical approach that treats voices as irrational byproducts of a disordered brain.
