I WONDER for d’Verse

I WONDER

What’s in her head? motherbirdIs she just feeling cold?

Are she and her babies

both trading warmth?

We know she’s not thinking

But what is she feeling?

What’s going on beneath

all those feathers?

She’s not feeling stuck

like some humans might do,

but following the path

laid down in her genes,

and so on and on.

  • Interesting take on the mind of a bird. It occurs to me that a bird is more likely to think than to feel. For some reason feelings seem more human, although I do believe my dog feels and thinks. But birds are different, I suppose.

    • Well, there’s instinct, which even in humans substitutes for thinking sometimes, And I understand crows appear able to think. As for feeling, I’ve seen a chicken die of fright, and a blind bird be frantic. I’ve never given the topic that much thought, however. True thy don’t purr, but I’ve really never read up on the subject. I guess I may have been anthropormophizing a tad. But the entire family looked cold to me!

  • …following the path laid down in her genes……so interesting! So often we anthropomorphize animals — give them human characteristics. I’m reminded of the beautiful redtail hawk who yearly built its nest on the high window ledge across from my office building…outside my window. And we watched “her” sit — and we watched the “dad” bring food to the “little ones” when they hatched. And we gawked at the wonderful “mothering” site….and then one morning…were appalled into reality to see the “mother” eating the carnage of one of the “babies” who had tried to fly and flown into the glass and dropped right near the nest. Yikes — can’t believe I’m remembering that scene. I closed my drapes and was reminded of what you’ve writ — followed the path of their genes.

  • The cold/warm part made me think of myself … giving all my warmth to my babies and having almost none left for big people. 🙂 I actually don’t even have enough for my kids. So much of the time, I have to fake it. But that’s what mommies do, I guess.
