Heather Cox Richardson Sums Up Jan 6 Hearing

Published July 22, 2022 by Nan Mykel

Well said and well quoted.

dianeravitch's avatarDiane Ravitch's blog

In case you misssed it, Heather Cox Richardson describes the highlights of the July 21 hearing of the Jan 6 Commission. The House GOP continues to ridicule the hearings as partisan, but so far almost everyone who testified is a Republican. The two who testified last night were working directly for Trump.

Highlight of the hearing: Senator Josh Hawley running to escape away from the mob he encouraged with his fist in the air. Sprinting, really. The hashtag that quickly appeared on Twitter: #JoshHawleyIsABitch. And this is the guy running on a “platform” of reviving masculinity.

When the chips are down, Josh Halley runs away.

Then there is the fact that there are no White House logs that day; the White House photographer was told not to take pictures of the most important day of Trump’s term; the Secret Service deleted text messages.

Funniest moment of the hearings: Trump recording…

I JUST WASHED A CENTIPEDE DOWN THE SINK

Published July 22, 2022 by Nan Mykel

…Or was it a millipede?  Poor thing, he didn’t have a choice as to how many legs he was born with.  For unscientific reasons I am afraid of those many-legged creatures..  If I was a good Christian I might feel guilt, but I still do.  There but for the grace of God go I discussion as follows from How to Get to Heaven and other Google results:

The origin of the saying there but for the grace of God go I is unknown, but it has been in use since at least the 1700s. It is sometimes shortened to there but for the grace of God or but for the grace of God.

However it is expressed, there but for the grace of God go I is a statement of humility and gratitude that acknowledges one’s own sinful nature and the need for God’s grace. One of the earliest attributions of the saying is to John Bradford, an English Reformer, who supposedly said it as he watched people led to execution for their crimes. In a sense he was saying, “That could have been me but for God’s grace.”….

In a way, the attitude of “there but for the grace of God go I” is an antidote to judgmentalism. When we see someone who is down and out, who is suffering hardship, or who is reaping unpleasant consequences, we can respond in two basic ways. We can say, “He deserves it and should have made better choices,” or we can say, “There but for the grace of God go I.” The first response is what Job’s three friends ultimately chose; the second response shows empathy as we acknowledge the kindness of God toward us and extend that kindness to the one in trouble.

HEY, NO FAIR?  I can’t turn all preachy when I’m an agnostic?  Just watch me!  A centipede or millipede?  Was he baptized?  But didn’t Jesus say something about blessing a sparrow, tho I can’t remember just where–One might say about our former president, “There but for the grace of God go I…?”  Doesn’t mean you wouldn’t get washed down the sink, but it would be with empathy.

NEWSFLASH: Someone has suggested we solve homelessness by shooting the homeless.  It’s being described as a joke, but funny ha-ha?  (It was Joe Rogan on his podcast), according to Google and many others.)

What if a white woman was raped by a black man and became pregnant?

It’s mind-blowing, the path laid out by Republicans.  Do you think they all might have caught covid of the brain?  Poor dears.  And here I was getting angry with them….

With the cost of being raped increasing exponentially…

Published July 20, 2022 by Nan Mykel

That’s right!  Why on earth are we punishing rape victims instead of comforting and protecting them?  I wonder how many female rape victims are planning to vote Republican?  You think about it, girl!

What kind of legal protection is available for women?  Can you imagine birthing your rapist’s baby?  My, this culture has turned  ugly!

Remember, women’s method of self protection needs to be legal.  Some may think it fortunate that it’s easy to buy protection now, thanks to the NRA.  What kind of protective device might work best, in case of a need to protect yourself? I’ve read that M-16s are easy to shoot–like a bb gun–and designed to disable but not necessarily to kill.  I reckon the gunshop owners would give you more info.

It’s nothing I’m recommending, mind you, but I can imagine how one might feel to have the establishment making you pay for having been raped. It must feel like scooping salt onto an open wound.

Until the fat lady sings*

When the great backlash occurs, who will be left standing?  Doesn’t history tell us that extremes in population sentiments swing back and forth?  Enough usually becomes enough.  Surely common sense will settle over our land soon?  Wishful hoping?  I’ll vote. What else do you suggest?

I liked this from the post of  Dr John Persico Jr.,  a vietnam vet:  https://agingcapriciously.com/2022/06/08/why-guns-will-not-make-you-safer/

“We can reduce the lethality of guns by limiting clip capacities and by eliminating rifles that were designed for military purposes and not hunting.  Why anyone would need a rifle with more than a three round capacity is beyond me.  Rifles should be for hunting or target shooting and nothing else.  Any game that you are hunting will be gone long before you can chamber and fire your third round.  A .223 caliber was first designed for the military in Vietnam.  I had to qualify on an M-16 in 1965 when they were first issued.  It was like shooting a bb gun.  Easy to shoot with a round that was designed to wound and not kill.  They said this would take two or more people out of the war instead of just one dead body.  The individual shot by a .223 would be severely wounded and would need someone to take him back to a medic or out of the war zone.  Read any of the gun magazines today and it looks like they are selling guns and accessories to someone who is going to war.  Helmets, bullet proof vests, high-capacity magazines, laser sights and guns more fit for killing humans than hunting are touted and readily available”

Friend Felix Speaks Again

Published July 19, 2022 by Nan Mykel

4th of JULY:  GOOD GRIEF!

If you like pretty poems, please look away,

for here I lament decay, dying and death.

I’m not bemoaning my dying contemporaries,

who lately fall like old-growth trees in a forest.

Nor do I pre-grieve my own impending death.

My concern is for the fate of our democracy,

as it is doing a dangerous dance with doom.

Our precious political freedoms are eroding.

Our fractured center seems not to be holding.

Our democracy could be in its death throes.

Female bodily autonomy has been outlawed,

voting rights have been wantonly suppressed,

there is massive support for Trump’s Big Lie.

The Supreme Court defies the majority’s will.

Throughout our land gun fetishism flourishes.

Louder liars shout down the voices of veracity.

Violence grows, the environment degrades.

This Independence Day is a day of gloom.

Sadly I fly our tattered flag upside down.

Today I can’t sing Happy Birthday America!

In these dark days, I weep as I sing of thee.

Couldn’t Resist

Published July 18, 2022 by Nan Mykel

Get a newspaper and roll it up, or get something hard like a rolling pin, make sure your child and dog are both in the room and hit yourself over the head for being so stupid. Your dog is just defending itself, you need to teach your kid what’s acceptable and what isn’t when it comes to the dog. DO NOT ever punish the dog – and what good is it going to do after the incident anyway, it won’t even know what it’s being punished for.

THOUGHT FLOOD

Published July 17, 2022 by Nan Mykel

WELL SIR, IT’S LIKE THIS….

Life’s a jigsaw puzzle but we can’t see the picture until the end.

Won’t the forced babies burn to a crisp well before they’re twenty?  How is that time enough to cure cancer?

In my dream journal, should I record the date I go to sleep or the date I wake up?

Is there a way to tell the difference between a photograph of a sunrise and a sunset?

Promises are too easy to make and too hard to keep.  Handy mermory gets in my way.

It’s easy to believe in Jack Frost because I see him once a year.  Sandman too, the next morning.  But…

So glad I’m not bald ’cause I’ve got bumps on my head.

I hope there’s reincarnation ’cause there’re some folks I need to tell off!

Most are hellbent on tearing down walls.  I need more cement in mine.

The other side of my flapjack says I should be feeding the hungry.

Quick, how does the placebo effect work. Can it help you to walk on water?

Am I outside looking in or inside looking out?

Isn’t it a pity we outgrew miracles!

Top of mind issues that aren’t

Published July 17, 2022 by Nan Mykel

Re-blogged. Sad but true…

Keith's avatarmusingsofanoldfart

Issues that need to be top of mind aren’t being discussed because we would rather talk about more exaggerated and contrived issues.

The global water crisis lives here, especially in drought prone areas like the Southwest United States, which is running dangerously low on water. Climate change only makes matters worse. And, this is even before we speak of the lead water pipe structures which have their own set of toxic issues as in Flint, Michigan.

Miami is the most at risk city in the world for encroaching sea levels due to climate change, but the governor calls more dramatic solutions liberal based ideas. Miami has built right to the coast and the limestone guarding the largest aquifer is porous. The fact the number of sunny days flooding has increased with sea water coming up through the street drains in Miami Beach should give people pause. Call me crazy, but…
