The Gathering for d’Verse

The Gathering for d’Verse

Most of those attending the gathering were Ginko bilobas, the longest living tree species, tracing back millions of years as opposed to the thousands which measure homo sapien as a species.  The gathering had been called by the Ginkos, out of  concern for the more recent and vulnerable tree species. Ginkos were the hardiest of all.

“We can no longer put up with the desecration of our world,”  an ancient one announced.  “The cockroaches can stay, but humans must be exterminated at a faster rate.  Best to be rid of the deadly human scourge than risk  total destruction of our celestial home.  All in favor?” Agreement rumbled throughout the forest. Then one spoke up.

“I’ve come to love the children that visit and value my shade.  Must we extinguish those also?”  It was a young Ginko who questioned.  “Are they not innocent?” Silence settled  throughout the forest but was soon followed by a bitter Arctic wind.

Who profits from approval of gun silencers? Mother Jones Alert

Published September 21, 2017 by Nan Mykel

The Latest Push to Deregulate Guns Could Make “Gang-Style Hits” Easier  –

A GOP bill on silencers will have “devastating effects” on public safety, law enforcement leaders say.

______________

Nan adds:   It sounds like a joke. “Now, a bill known as the Hearing Protection Act that is quietly making its way through Congress proposes to remove silencers from the list of regulated items under the National Firearms Act of 1934.”   Is our hearing more crucial than our lives or profits for gun makers?

Don’t Know Where This Came From–One Reader Swears It Works!

Published September 21, 2017 by Nan Mykel

Sorry to be so lazy, but that’s what I am.  I don’t see how it could be meaningful.
I fear I’m participating in a hoax….

  1. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (not your area code)
  2. Multiply by 80.
  3. Add 1
  4. Multiply by 250
  5. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
  6. add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
  7. Subtract 250
  8. Divide by 2.
  9. Do you recognize the answer?

I think somebody somewhere is laughing out loud at my effort.  No, I guess not!

Tell me how it works!

What Finding Out My Dog Is Sick Has Taught Me – Re-blog from Being Lydia

Published September 19, 2017 by Nan Mykel

So touching and brave not to run from your feelings. I so wish I had followed you example with all of my pets. I can’t help thinking a magszine devoted to pets would love to have this post.

First of all, I apologize for not posting sooner. Life kind of got away from me. I have been down with a cold turned bronchitis and spending time with Violet. Also, this has been a very difficult and emotional piece to write.

Last Saturday we took Violet to the vet. She had a lump in her throat that seemed to be growing, was not eating and had other symptoms that concerned us.

We were quite worried on the half hour drive to the vet. Violet is 13 years old and has several health conditions. We know she won’t live forever, but we also want to make sure she isn’t suffering.

The appointment showed that all of her lymph nodes are swollen and sore. The vet alluded to the fact this is not good and may very well be cancer. He took some samples and on Monday called to say that…

Making A Home – A re-blog from Sandy Sue

Published September 19, 2017 by Nan Mykel

Great attitude and I see it’s working! Congratulations on the wisdom. I’m re-blogging

(Waiting for moderation)

Sandy Sue's avatarA Mind Divided

This summer I spent some time considering a move to Des Moines, but after talking to a realtor (what was I thinking?) and finding out how impenetrable the subsidized housing process is there, I changed my mind.  Instead I opted to work at making Marshalltown my Home.

I grew up here and have been back for ten years, but I never really thought of it as home.  Growing up on a farm, “town” was a place to get groceries, a place the school bus dropped me off and picked me up.  After going through electroshock, losing my job, my home, and my husband coming back to Marshalltown mentally ill was a personal failure and a punishment.

I left Minneapolis with its liberal politics, diversity of culture and a townhouse I loved for a conservative rural backwater where I lived in my friends’ spare room with a curtain for a door…

The God Gene

Published September 18, 2017 by Nan Mykel

Inside, nestled into a corner of the brain,  lies a chapel tucked away just in case we need it. Tear ducts have been installed for weeping, fingers for pointing, painting, sometimes pinching. When glee or ecstasy overtake us,  we are provided outlets  for dancing or singing.  On those long dark days of need, there is our inner chapel, deemed by some “the God gene.”  Why not?

Bill Phillis: Ohio Allows ECOT to Spend $33 Million on Ads, Lobbying, Lawsuits, and Profits : Re-Blog

Bill Phillis, watchdog extraordinaire for Ohio, reports that the state of Ohio has allowed the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) to use public money in its public relations blitz to avoid accountability for inflation of enrollment and the state’s efforts to claw back more than $60 million. ECOT is notable for having the lowest graduation rate of any high school in the nation, as well as dubious quality standards. Its founder is a major contributor to elected officials. In return, he has collected many millions of dollars of profit.

Bill Phillis writes:

“ECOT has spent $33 million on ads, lobbyists, profits and lawsuits
since January 2016

“According to a September 3 Columbus Dispatch article, ECOT has spent $33 million on TV ads, lobbyists, lawsuits and William Lager’s for-profit companies since January 2016, all in pursuit of gaining state approval to continue to count students that are not participating.

“Over 400…

Check This Out If You Dare

Published September 16, 2017 by Nan Mykel

Sorry, I don’t know the answer to this one. Let me know if you do!  (Now I wonder if Google knows), but play fair, without Google. I still don’t know. I’ll wait 4 weeks (9-11-17) before giving the agreed-upon answer from you. P.S. It’s okay to use the Bible.

God made Adam out of the dust,

But thought it best to make me first.

So I was made before the man,

according to God’s Holy plan.

My whole body God made complete,

without arms, or hands or feet.

My ways and acts did God control,

but in my body He placed no soul.

A living being I became,

and Adam gave to me a name.

Then from his presence I withdrew,

for this man Adam I never knew.

All my Master’s laws I do obey,

and from these laws I never sray.

Thousands of me go in fear,

but seldom on the earth appear.

Later, for a purpose God did see,

He placed a living soul in me.

But that soul f mne God had to claim,

and from me took it back again.

But when from me this soul had fled,

I was the same as when first made.

Without arms, legs, feet, or soul,

I  travel on from pole to pole.

My labors are from day to night,

and to men I once furnished light.

Thousands of people, both yung and old

did by my death bright lihts behold.

No right or wrong can I conceive;

the Bible and its teachings I can’t believe.

The fear of death doesn’t trouble me;

pure happiness I will never see.

And up in Heaven I can never go,

nor in the grave nor hell below.

So get your Bible and read with care;

you’ll find my name recorded there.

This puzzle was written by a lady in California in 1890 in response to a gentleman in Philadelphia, who said that he would pay $1,000 to anyone who could write a puzzle that he could not solve.  He failed to do so, and paid the lady $1,000…

The answer is one word, five letters long,  and appears only four times in the King James version of the Bible.  An 8-year old boy figured out the puzzle. Can you? Good hunting.

I never came up with the answer. A friend I showed it to immediately said “whale,” which was correct.  For the answer, I wrote my niece who had originally sent it to me about 10 years ago, without the answer but saying she knew what it was…..My how time flies!  So no one in blogland gets the $10,000 prize. Better luck next time!
