Boredom — it could be verse

Published August 26, 2017 by Nan Mykel

The days have separated into building blocks.

No–I don’t mean day to day, but within days.

First  is a block of sleeping late, then CNN.  And

there’s my blog block  and checking e-mails.

My leg hurts for awhile and maybe I try to write

a poem–that won’t rhyme.  At 5 pm in my night

gown, yawning,  yearning for graduate school

and the halcyon days of mutual excitement

over new ideas and possibilities and the burst

of mental balloons showering us like soap bubbles.

When my mind is last to go I can’t hardly make

it there.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF WHO I AM?

Published July 19, 2017 by Nan Mykel

Nan with therapist; . Dreamers, 1899. John Brown.)

What poor therapist would want to get stuck with an 81 year old woman with degenerative arthritis, in slight cognitive decline trailing a Ph.D. in clinical psychology behind her?  (That’s my inner response to my suggestion I see a therapist).  As messed up as I am, I wouldn’t want to do that to anybody.

I’m lonely but don’t like to be around people, one child has disowned me, another avoids me, and I am responsible for bringing to life a Down Syndrome child.  I have sold two houses impulsively–losing considerable money–am avoiding 5 women who are desperately lonely and I can’t crank myself up to make a contribution to my fellow man/woman.  Not quite agoraphobic, I inch away on my walker, also avoiding my dirty dishes.  On top of that, my heart has turned to stone.  This is my truth; please don’t argue with me.

I enjoy the  cat’s pajamas

they verbalize at times, but not

the moans of underlying pain.

Don’t let us know what lies ahead

a life of somersaults, dance

and glee only to be sidetracked

by a dislocated knee.  That I’m

one of those complaining does not

change my mind a whit.

If you think that I am lying just you wait a bit.

Regenerating Brains of the Dead

Published May 11, 2016 by Nan Mykel

Neuroscience News  Shared publicly  –  Biotech Companies Given Green Light to Attempt to Regenerate Brains of the Dead     Two biotech companies in the United States have been given the green light to see if it is possible to regenerate the brains of dead people.

(When I was a little kid I used to have a fantasy about being a pickled brain in a jar, but conscious. It was not a pretty fantasy…)

From Popular Science: <http://www.popsci.com/maybe-its-not-such-great-idea-to-bring…> In the best possible case, the proposed Reanima treatment would miraculously restore the previously-declared dead person. They would regain full psychological continuity, the death certificate would be nullified, and they would continue their old life. They would clearly benefit because they would get a second chance at life.

But it is not hard to imagine that the treatment would not restore the brain completely: memories, personality and functions might be scrambled, lost, or replaced with newly-grown tissue. A new person may have a life worth living and enjoy existing. They could be said to have benefited in the same way a child benefits from being brought into the world. But if there is limited or no psychological continuity, then the original person won’t benefit: they are now truly dead, since their body and brain have become a new person.

Would it make sense to want this kind of treatment if it only makes new people? It is not a health-restoring treatment for anybody, merely an unusual way of reproduction. And though we may want some part of the original person to remain, we could equally well transplant the organs to benefit other people.  (Italics mine)

The real problem of course is the possibility of creating persons who have lives that are not worth living, or beings that are not people but who we still have a moral duty to care for.
