When Honesty Honestly Doesn’t Pay

What if a small lie…

Could help the truth slide by
help someone who’s gone astray
sometimes it’s just the best way.

What if the small lie…

Would help someone feel better
make the world a nicer place
save another person’s face.

Honesty is the key
it’s plain to see
it’s a great policy;
to some degree.

What if the truth hurts…

Just remember to keep it small
it can get you through another day
when honesty honestly doesn’t pay.

Metamorphosis Two

Published January 26, 2020 by Nan Mykel

Something was different.

A strange odor alarmed the soldier. Her last memory was of being attacked by the invaders and then running around in circles.  That was all, and now this…

She covered her eyes in a vain attempt to locate the familiar smell she had known all her life and depended upon to navigate accurately.  Unbelieving, she found herself lying on her back, waving her legs in the air. A burp escaped her, bringing up fluid.  She struggled to turn herself over, to support herself on her knees, then sensed a human voice above her.

“Harriet? Are you okay?”

No, she was not.

When you renew your drivers’ license…(Hopefully before?)

Published January 24, 2020 by Nan Mykel

In order to catch a plane these days I think you can avoid this roadblock if you renew your license early.  Correct me if I’m in error. The following applies to Ohio, maybe all states:

I promised to do further research on this topic but I’m in a time crunch before my surgery in Atlanta Feb. 10.  So I’ll just quote a little from the Ohio Department of Public Safety Bureau of Motor Vehicles’  “Acceptable Documents List Compliant DL-ID Card:  To prove identity, you must show proof of the following five elements:”

1. U.S. Birth Certificate [if your name has not changed since birth].  *Additional Proof of Legal Name Documents–Is your current full legal name the same as the name listed on your identity document?  If the documents presented do not prove full legal name and/or are inconsistent with your current [valid, unexpired] , BMV record, additional documents must be presented.

Marriage Certificate or Marriage License :  NOTE: If you have more than one marriage, you may need to bring  documentation from each marriage and/or divorce to connect with your birth certificate, [valid, unexpired] passport or USCIS documents to your current legal name. Permanent Resident Card (form I-551) must show current legal name.

My daughter dealt with this requirement before her license expired, and her license has a red star printed on her license which is an A-OK sign to ride an airplane..

I won’t spell out the other four elements–less troublesome to me.

Stream of Tears

The absence of hate is so refreshing! I’m reblogging. As an atheist, I can relate also.

Smooth white rocks line the familiar bed
A sad child sits close beside me by the stream
Providing me a harbor where I come to scream.

Yabbies, mountain lobster or mudbugs
Crawdads swimming against Nature’s mirror
I point them out to the girl who is now nearer.

Appalachian bristle fern surrounds us
No one will attend my nursing graduation
I share my news with these spirited crustaceans.

There will be no pictures or celebrations
Tadpoles are frolicking in a delightful fashion
My walk onstage will offer up silence, not passion.

Tears forming in my sore eyes yet once again
As I lean over, I see them mixing with the stream
This place of God’s where I come back to scream.

Who is this child I wonder as she offers me a hug
My parents drunk again, why on this specific week
The River Birch’s leaves begin to clap and speak

REFLECTIONS ON HONESTY

Published January 16, 2020 by Nan Mykel

This relates to a dream, a self reflection, memories, connections of past events, wondering, and a resolution to reflect at the end of each day on any lies I’ve told that day, the motivation for them, how many were due to not wanting to hurt the others’ feelings, alternative things I could have said that were truthful, etc.  Perhaps reading Difficult Conversations, a library book I recently checked out,  recent readings on consciousness and the booklet I’m writing for my children and grandchildren called “Stepping Stones to Inside,” two longstanding grudges against likeable people who insulted me in the past, wondering how I limit my relations with others (and always have) by an unwillingness to hurt others.  No need to review the encyclopedic past,  but I am excited about the decision to reflect on my truthtelling at the end of each day, and to see what alternatives I might have utilized, because I am  thirsty for honesty and aware of how I may keep myself from the warming experience of a truthful relationship.  Right now I feel hungry for the truth from a benign person.  Truth from someone whose intention is to hurt me would not be welcome.  It’s an experiment in living that I’m seeking.  And yes, this is motivated by a dream I had and which my unconscious let me remember.  All this may be a little too honest for the reader, so I will resume tomorrow night on my DIARY page.

And if my truth be told, I did not stay on my vegetarian diet.  And oh, one thing I absolutely hate are manipulations.

(Sorry, not my image. Is it yours?)

Swimming Cows Escape to Safety

Published January 12, 2020 by Nan Mykel

I’m a fan of the Week magazine, and discovered this clipping from a 2019 issue:

“Three cows that Hurricane Dorian swept out to sea from the Outer Banks have been discovered living on a nearby island. After being hit with a 9-foot wall of water on Cedar Island, the bovine trio apparently swam several miles across North Carolina’s Core Sound to Cape Lookout National Seashore park. B. G. Horvat, a spokesman for the park, said the valiant cattle ‘appear to have a bond.’…”

Costumes of myself – A poem

Most worthy of a reblog!

Lauren Kathleen's avatarLauren Kathleen

An unchanging skeleton template –
The foundation of every self
Is the same cascade of roots
Mapped out in a blueprint, essential
To the unfolding of a life.

We build costumes of ourselves around the frame work,
Skins new then old then made new again.
Or new then old then forgotten completely,
New year, new me.
But the old year, old me
Still lingers silently –
Hung on a hanger in the wardrobe,
Hidden amongst the other worn and torn
Uniforms of which me I’ll be today.

Today I may be washed and dried
With the creases ironed and holes patched
And sleeves attached, with rips repaired and
Complete with a belt and a bow in my hair,
But maybe tomorrow I will slip back into an old skin
To be momentarily reacquainted with
A memory, for the fun of remembering.
I will cloak myself in a costume of my…

THE JOKE’S ON ME

Published January 8, 2020 by Nan Mykel

I thought I knew my regular taxi driver pretty well, and apparently he thought he knew me.  When he picked me up the other day he said, “Did you hear? The leader of Iran wanted to come to the United Nations to ask for help for his country, but Trump wouldn’t let him enter the USA.  Something about not having done his paperwork on time.”

Later I decided he was telling me a joke (only because it wasn’t in the news).  I said at the time, “That’s terrible!  That’s awful!”

He said “Yeah it is, isn’t it.”

So I’ve decided (a)That he’s a Trump man telling a joke to Trump supporters

(b) He thought I was for Trump and would laugh.

(c)He had no idea I was so gullible as to believe him.

(d)He’ll find out who I’m for next time he picks me up, if he doesn’t already know.  Still, I’m embarrassed by my naivete.
