Today–September 9–is the day for a scheduled prison riot in 20 states. Looking up my own state I found that “Ohio holds the distinction of being the first state to sell off a public prison to a private corporation. This happened in 2011 when Governor John Kasich oversaw the sale of Lake Erie Correctional Institution to the Corrections Corporation of America. The sale was promoted as a way to save the state money, but according to the ACLU of Ohio, the plan largely backfired….” (www.acluohio.org/prisons-for-profit)
Can’t find any news on it online and it’s almost 1 pm. Anybody hear what’s going on?

Sautee Barb commented on Prison Riot Day – Reblog…
i will be watching the nightly news. Not that it is an easy question…. I am so sick of the “public-private partnership” fattening corporate wallets, but publicly run prisons are not much better. Remember how the chain gangs used to be hired out to create asphalt driveways for private summer homes in western NC? Working with the chains on and a man with a gun over there. Not so much improvement since then. Way too many people in prison or with lives ruined by felony records. Now a lot of them are white, and related to us, so we are starting to notice. Maybe this strike will boost awareness, but I can understand why a lot of prisoners will be conflicted about the wisdom of joining in. It’s not like they have freedom of speech.
