Howdy Nan!
We’ve lost two very important things: (1) Unity. We no longer see ourselves as Americans, first, group affiliation later. We are divided and treat the other side as if they are foreigners. And (2) Empathy. There is little empathy left in a world where everyone is either in your in-group or is in the out-group. We really are not going anywhere until we overcome those two.

Nan, sadly I agree with you. We have taken two steps back. I just wrote this on another post, but your invitation makes want to add it here. “Disagreeing with someone does not mean being disagreeable.” If we give like we want to get, then just maybe some of the words may seep in.
I am reminded of Daryl Davis, an African-American man who has talked over 200 KKK members into quitting and giving him their robes. How does he do it? He talks to them and listens. People like to talk. Only then, he can ask a few probing questions.
